italian.

Last week in preparation for my class, i decided to go to a few Italian yoga classes….i went to Monic’s Yoga Dinamico, then to Nicol’s Yoga Dinamico B, both at YogaMilan, i also attended a Vinyasa class at BeYoga which i thoroughly enjoyed and am thinking about going back to today actually….and finally i went to a Hatha Yoga class at Centro Yoga Badhra….
All the classes were great, and challenging in their own way…the fact that they were in italian i was constantly looking out for how certain things were said, or specific words that were used….anything that i could then incorporate into my own classes.
BeYoga was probably the first and only place that reminded me of yoga studios back in London, so i really liked it, but i also really enjoyed the class & the teacher, Gabriele, was really good. Not to mention there is an awesome Vegan restaurant round the corner – sooooo Yummy! Just in case any of you were interested, the restaurant is called Bio Sapori Regionali.

Just in case anyone was interested in visiting BeYoga, please see below their class schedule:

And finally….my class on wednesday….i was incredibly nervous as i knew i had to do the entire thing in Italian, and i have never taught in italian ever before….
There was only 1 student who showed up in the end, but nonetheless, i was happy to finally be teaching, even if it was in italian 🙂
I was very conscious to start, but once i started, then it just flowed…i was just going with it, and it was great…i did notice that towards the very end, before savasana, i would forget some words….but i think with practice and time, this won’t happen.
I will be teaching again this wednesday, let’s just hope that more than 1 student shows up! Fingers crossed!
I’m going back to BeYoga today, to the 13.00 Vinyasa class w/ Gabriele, and tomorrow i’m thinking about going to another Vinyasa class at Kriya Yoga Ashram Milano tomorrow at 7.30am! ouch…but it’s gotta be done 🙂

i gotta run now dudes and dudettes, catch ya’lls later x

14th December.

4 months exactly have passed since i first landed in Milan…4 months today! I arrived on the 14th August, and tonight i will have my first yoga trial – first time ever teaching in Italian! Scary stuff….

If tonight goes well, and the class is a success and there are enough people who will take the class (there needs to be a max of 4 people for a class to go ahead)…then i will be teaching every Wednesday from 8 or 8.15pm to 9.15 or 9.30pm (depending on what time we start). Tonight’s class is free as its a ‘trial’ class…so if you’re at loose ends and short on cash, get on down to Yogasama, Via Ripamonti 110 for some Vinyasa Flow 🙂

Fingers crossed.

I’ll let you guys know tomorrow how it all went…gotta get the last final bits done before i go.

I just hope i don’t forget any italian words!

See below for some info…this was the email that was sent out to all the members/students at Yogasama.

Cari amici e cari allievi,
a grande richiesta, dal 14 Dicembre partirà un nuovo corso:
VINYASA FLOW YOGA (YOGA DINAMICO)

~ Danny Paradise ~

Danny Paradise

In a previous article of mine, YogaFestival | Milano, i mentioned how whilst in London i would attend someone’s workshop…yup you guessed it…the pic above kinda gave it away huh?
On Nov 6th, my yogi friends & I, Ana Lucia Romero, JV Yupangco-Russell and Natsuko, attended Danny Paradise’s 3hr 30min workshop on “Chakras: Balancing Life Force, Yoga, Shamanism + Aging: Approaching Transition With Vitality, In Clarity + Peace”.

It was incredibly interesting and did not pan out as many other workshops i have attended. To start there was a discussion on shamanism and aging, death, fears…he gave us some sheets:
1. a list of books he suggested we read;
2. some pranayama exercises;
3. the full primary series
4. the intermediate series II
5. surya namaskar a & b

I had no idea what to expect to be honest….there seemed to be a lot of people who had been to his workshops before, addressing him as Danny when asking him a Q. The gentleman next to me had been practicing yoga for the past 21 years, and told me that Danny was an old family friend. He attended many shamanic gatherings, which i was told, were quire rife in the UK…hmm who knows if there’s some in Italy too?
We began with surya namaskar a & b – i believe we did 4 of each…which i thought was interesting, i’ve always either done 3 or 5…anyway, minor details…we then started going thru the primary series but at some point the class just went off onto a totally different tangent…Danny just chose some asanas, some from the primary series, some from the intermediate one, and we just attempted doing them, some with more ease and grace than others (i.e. me!)…it was interesting because i got to try out some new poses that i’ve never ever tried…and some i got better than others, for sure, but some, for the life of me, i just could not do.

Shavasana was well deserved i must say…it felt like i was lying there for what seemed like forever…i felt sooooo relaxed and rested and at ease….it was pretty amazing. It was bliss.

One thing i can say, is that if i could, i would definitely go to Danny’s workshop in Thailand at jungleyoga…he is doing one next year from jan 28 – feb 8…for whoever was interested in joining or going along, you can get more details from his website: http://dannyparadise.com/…i was thinking about it, but have now decided that perhaps next year is not the year….there’s a special trip i want to do…and i am still not sure that it’ll go ahead for certainty, but if it does, you will most definitely hear a lot about it…if it doesn’t, i may have to move it again !

Its getting pretty late here so i should probably get some zzzz’s…sweet dreams everyone nite nite xxx

*** ctyoga to teach at yogasama ***

Yes you have guessed it! It fills me with so much joy to finally be able to announce that  I will be teaching Vinyasa Flow yoga classes at Yogasama, a yoga studio in Via Ripamonti 112, nearest metro stops are MM3 Lodi and MM3 Brenta.

My start date hasn’t been confirmed just yet – but i will be discussing this further with the owner of Yogasama, Nicol, come Friday 18th November.

It’s been almost 3months since i left London, and probably about 3months and a half since the last class i taught in London…last official class (i’ve taught friends here for fun, but haven’t earned money through it yet)…and it feels great to know that all my hard work has actually paid off…you can’t really tell sometimes, and you do wonder if what you are doing is right? There were definitely times of frustration and sadness; i had to remind myself many many times of that yogic saying “Patience, Determination, Faith”….you have to be patient, and stay determined but most of all have faith that where you are headed is the right, the right way, the right path.

I honestly do believe that everything happens for a reason, and that of course things do take time, Rome wasn’t built in a day after all, so i am relieved that things are starting to happen and that soon i’ll be teaching again! I have missed it so much…

So, if interested, please let me know and i’ll give you details of days and times i’ll be teaching…and of course i’ll be telling you all my start date! So watch this space 🙂

Just a little info on Yogasama…

Initially founded by Elisabetta Rebuzzini, and now managed and looked after by Nicol Koronel (a student of hers). The studio continues to place great importance on the perfect execution of each asana, following their motto:

COME DENTRO, COSI’  FUORI – AS YOU ARE INSIDE, YOU ARE OUTSIDE

Yogasama offer different types of yoga: Hatha, Vinyasa Flow (here known as Dinamic Yoga), Raja and on Saturdays Pranayama or Yoga Nidra, there are also presentations, workshops and events to keep everyone relaxed and entertained.
Classes allow between 10-12 students, they are kept small so that students get the maximum attention from the teacher.
Books and manuals on Yoga are also available should you wish to read or just scroll thru one, perhaps whilst sipping on a cup of tea 🙂

So, why not come for a free taster class?  Here’s the address:

Associazione Sportiva Dilettantistica e Culturale YOGASAMA
Via Ripamonti 112, Milano
m: +39 347 07 41 825
e: info@yogasama.it

And should you need it, here’s a map to help you out:

Hope to see you soon on the mat! x

~ Lino Miele ~

Lino Miele

I found out that Lino Miele was coming to Milan for 4 days of ashtanga. There was no way i was going to miss this.

Lino Miele “is said to be one of the most capable Ashtanga Yoga teachers in the world”, he is also one of the fewest certified teachers in the world as Sri K Patthabi Jois’ student.

I quickly signed up to 2 mysore style classes – both at 7am in the morning. I paid a total of €70 for both classes…i guess i had assumed that it would be something like when Sharath came to Milan….but no…it was a mysore style class which meant that you come and you start going thru the primary series sequence on your own, regardless of what everyone else is doing…and then Lino Miele and the other resident Yogi’s at the Scuola di Ashtanga Yoga Milano walk around everyone and adjust & help.

All of this is all good & well, problem is i am so used to doing Vinyasa flow, which gives a lot more freedom of movement from one asana to the next, mixing it up between primary, secondary etc…i wasn’t prepared for this…not very prepared…in fact i was able to get to Navasana w/o any problems…then the problems start. So if like me, you get a little stuck after Navasana, Lino suggests doing a few exercises to release the shoulders: camel pose and bridge pose…then you you were asked to move into the adjacent room to go thru the finishing sequence.

Which is exactly what i did. What i didn’t know and could not prepare for, was the emotional impact the practice would have on me.

It was intense, daunting, i was also the youngest one in the room, everyone else was more mature and definitely way more experienced…it was quite scary to be honest….it didn’t help that the room was small and narrow, very hot and steamy, and that the space between each mat was probably no more than 5cm…all you can hear is the deep ujjay breath emanating from each student….it was almost entrancing….the deep breathing, the movements, there was something very powerful in that room that connected everyone…it was beautiful. I went thru different emotions, i felt happiness, elation, frustration, sadness, anger….and during savasana some tears were even shed. It almost felt like being broken down to be rebuilt ~ it was almost cleansing ~ i do believe that by the end of the day i felt so much better…like i had found the answers, or at least that the answers were there, and that it’s not impossible, it can be done, you just gotta hang in there and persevere…patience, determination & faith….after all, as Sri K Patthabi Jois said “99% practice, 1% theory….practice, practice, practice and all is coming”.

Lino Miele comes to Milan twice a year – October and March i believe? Tho i will need to double check that! 😉
